Things to Do

Mae Haad

The main activity on offer at Mae Haad is snorkeling in the crystal clear waters around Koh Ma. There is a collection of corals near the sand bank joining the island to the mainland. Follow the signs to find the best way to approach the corals. You can see a great profusion of fish and other marine life around the corals.

It's easy to find a resort that rents kayaks. They don't cost much per hour. You can paddle around Koh Ma and explore the corals. It's good fun for both adults and kids. Please don't attempt to circumnavigate the island!

Chaloklum Diving has a shop at Mae Haad Cove Bungalows. They offer PADI diving courses as well as fun dives. They pick customers up and drive them to the pier at Chaloklum where they are taken in a big boat to one of the major dive spots. Lots of people prefer to dive from Koh Phangan as there is less of a factory production line attitude to teaching diving compared to Koh Tao. It is possible to dive the Koh Ma Marine Park.

Wangsai Waterfall

Wangsai Waterfall is located to the south of Mae Haad between Mae Haad and Haad Salad. It is signposted. You can walk there in 10 minutes from Mae Haad. The waterfall is in a beautiful natural setting. There is a large basin at the bottom of the falls suitable for bathing.

There are lots of great places to get a Thai massage in Koh Phangan. Many of the bigger places also offer courses in Thai massage. In Mae Haad you can get a massage at Mama's Massage (south beach), and Suchada Massage (concrete road).

Koh Phangan has always been a place for new age therapies and courses. In Mae Haad you can get yoga classes at Mandala Yoga located on the beach. The same people run Om Bakery. In Haad Salad (near Wangsai Waterfall) there is also the Yoga Retreat

Thailand is famous for its tattoo art. There are several skillful tattoo artists in Koh Phangan. In Mae Haad you can get a reasonably priced tattoo at Freedom Tattoo. It is a small wooden hut on the beach.

Near Mae Haad

Phangan Safari

Phangan Safari has elephant trekking, snake shows, eco tours and boat trips. Although the elephants are well looked after, this place is not for those who object to using animals for commercial purposes. They apparently offer weddings on elephants. Located just outside Chaloklum, 10 minutes drive from Mae Haad.

Wipeout is located at Laem Son Lake near Srithanu. It is about 15 minutes drive from Mae Haad. For 500 Thai Baht you can have fun with inflatables in a lake all day. There is an obstacle course as well as the chance to fly through the air. Cheap beer and food available. See the video in the left-hand column.

Mountain Biking

There is a growing interest in mountain biking in Koh Phangan. There is a mountain bike club based in Thongsala who have made some great courses through the interior of the island. Most travel agents in Koh Phangan only rent out motorbikes, but a few also have mountain bikes for hire. There is plenty of potential for mountain biking around Mae Haad. Just be sure to bring water and use sunblock.

Full Moon Party

Without doubt the biggest draw for Koh Phangan is the Full Moon Party in Haad Rin Town. It has become a huge international event attracting thousands of party-minded people who dance all night under the full moon. Many then head off to one of the after parties. Not everyone's idea of entertainment, but still an unforgettable experience.

Half Moon Party

The second biggest party on Koh Phangan. This party attracts crowds of techno and trance fans. Long running party with live show, psychedelic decorations and jungle setting.

Black Moon Party

Small goa-trance style party at Mac Bay in Ban Tai. Light show, weird art and all night hedonism.

Other Parties

It seems every year another regular party squeezes its way onto the party calendar. These include the Jungle Experience, Sramanora Waterfall Party, Rhythm and Sands, Pirate's Bar Moon Set Party and Loi Lay Floating Bar Party. See the links on the left for more information.

Party Tips

Mae Haad is not a party beach. It doesn't have bars with DJ music or late night events. Every Full Moon Party there are taxis provided for those who want to go to the party. They cost 300 Thai Baht per person. To get a taxi back join the taxi rank at the back of Haad Rin town. Expect to pay more for the return journey. After all, if you caught a taxi at 3am in your own country you would expect to be charged at a higher rate!

Here are a few tips for safety at the parties in Koh Phangan:

  • Leave your valuables in a safe at your resort
  • Break up the buckets with water to avoid passing out early on
  • Don't leave your drink unattended. People's drinks have been spiked in the past.
  • Public nudity is against Thai law
  • Now is not the best time to try drugs for the first time - especially magic mushrooms
